Resolution: match it to your screen size and use case
1080p (Full HD) is still perfectly usable on a 24-inch screen for office work and casual gaming. Move up to a 27-inch or larger display and 1440p (QHD) keeps text and images sharp without demanding as much GPU power as 4K. 4K is best reserved for design, photo/video editing, or larger screens where the extra detail is actually visible.
Refresh rate matters most for gaming, less for office work
A standard 60Hz monitor is fine for spreadsheets, documents and video calls. For gaming, a 144Hz or higher refresh rate makes fast motion noticeably smoother — but it only helps if your PC's graphics card can actually produce frames fast enough to take advantage of it, so it's worth pairing this choice with your GPU rather than buying it in isolation.
Panel type: IPS vs VA vs TN
- IPS — the most common choice today; strong color accuracy and wide viewing angles, good for both work and gaming.
- VA — deeper contrast and blacks, often used on curved monitors, but slightly slower response time than IPS.
- TN — the fastest response time and typically the cheapest, but weaker color accuracy and viewing angles; mostly relevant for competitive esports setups on a tight budget.
For mixed work-and-gaming use
If one monitor needs to handle both spreadsheets during the day and games in the evening, a 27-inch 1440p IPS panel with a 144Hz refresh rate is a well-rounded choice for most people — sharp enough for text work, fast enough for gaming, and without the GPU demands of 4K.
Don't overlook ergonomics
A monitor with height, tilt and swivel adjustment is a genuine quality-of-life upgrade for anyone spending hours at a desk, and is easy to overlook while comparing panel specs. A fixed-height stand that leaves the screen too low or too high is a common and avoidable source of neck and eye strain.
